Moonstone
The tear drop of the goddess that seals the moonlight.
📜 History and Stories
Moonstone has been mysteriously associated with the moon since ancient times. The ancient Romans believed it to be a gemstone formed from the light of the moon and believed that the moon goddess Diana lived inside the stone. In India, moonstone is regarded as a sacred stone and is said to be the stone of luck found on the night of the full moon.
During the Art Nouveau period, moonstone's opaque beauty was favored by master jewelers such as René Lalique, who used it extensively in his dreamy naturalistic works.
🌍 Major Origin Distribution
Sri Lanka is historically the most famous producer of high quality moonstone, known for its almost transparent color and intense blue halo. India is another important traditional producer. In recent years, Tanzania, Madagascar and Myanmar have also produced high quality moonstone.

✨ Mysterious greenish-white glow
The fascinating halo of moonstone is not a color, but an optical effect. It consists of extremely thin layers of alternating feldspar minerals, sodium feldspar and orthoclase. When light strikes these microscopic layers, it scatters, creating a hazy blue or white halo that floats on the surface of the stone.

💰 Different quality grades and values
The value of moonstone is mainly determined by the intensity of its halo, the transparency and clarity of its body color.
1. Halo (Sheen)
The most important factor. The more intense and concentrated the blue halo, the higher the value.
2. Body Color
Colorless and transparent body colors are the most valuable as they highlight the blue halo. White, gray or greenish tints are less valuable.
3. Clarity
The fewer the inclusions, the greater the transparency, the clearer the halo, and the higher the value. Typical inclusions are "centipede" cracks.
4. Cut
It is usually cut and ground to a curved surface (egg surface) to maximize its halo effect.
A value ladder of different qualities
From the common milky white moonstone to the top quality "vitreous blue" moonstone, which is transparent with a strong blue halo, the value varies greatly.
