Malachite
A healing stone that symbolizes transformation and guardianship.
📜 History and Stories
Malachite is named for its color and texture that resembles the spots on a peacock's feather. It is one of the earliest minerals utilized by mankind. Ancient Egyptians mined malachite as early as 4000 B.C. and ground it into a powder to be used as eye shadow and mural pigment.
In 19th century Russia, huge deposits of malachite were discovered in the Ural Mountains and used by the Tsars to decorate their palaces, most notably the Malachite Hall in the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, whose columns, fireplaces, and huge vases were inlaid with malachite in the ultimate in luxury.
🌍 Major Origin Distribution
Historically, the Ural Mountains in Russia were synonymous with top quality malachite, but have now been largely depleted. Today, the vast majority of the world's gem-quality malachite comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Africa. Other sources include Zambia, Namibia, Australia and Arizona, USA.

💰 Different quality grades and values
The value of malachite is largely determined by its pattern, color and polish quality. It is a relatively affordable gemstone, but good quality stones with unique patterns are still highly sought after.
1. Pattern
The most important factor. Clear, intricate and aesthetically pleasing patterns, such as "peacock eyes" or feathered textures, are the most valuable.
2. Color
A bright, rich emerald green is more valuable than a pale or dark green. Contrast between shades of green is also important.
3. Luster
Good quality malachite should have a silky or glassy luster and should be polished smooth and flawless.
4. size and shape
Large and well-patterned malachite can be used for carvings and is of higher value.
Value ladder for different patterns
From simple banding to complex concentric circles of "peacock's eyes," the value of malachite varies with the rarity and beauty of its pattern.

👑 royalty and art
Due to its softer texture, malachite is less often used in everyday royal jewelry, but it is unrivaled in the decorative arts. In addition to the Malachite Hall in the Russian Winter Palace, many European palaces and churches contain magnificent malachite pieces such as fireplaces, table tops and chalices. High-end jewelry brands such as Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier often incorporate its distinctive texture into their designs.
