The story of the Paraíba tourmaline is a modern legend. In the 1980s, a miner named Heitor Dimas Barbosa dug intuitively for years in the Brazilian state of Paraíba, convinced that there was a gemstone unlike any other. Finally, in 1989, he discovered this unprecedented neon blue-green tourmaline.
Its appearance completely shocked the gemstone world, and its unique electric color made its price soar, making it the most precious and sought-after variety in the tourmaline family, and still the darling of the top jewelry market.

The first and most classic source of tourmaline was the state of Paraíba in Brazil. Later, copper-bearing tourmaline was also found in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte, as well as in Nigeria and Mozambique in Africa. Although chemically similar, it is widely believed that only tourmaline from Paraiba, Brazil, possesses the highest color saturation and therefore carries a high provenance premium.
