Emerald is one of the oldest gemstones, and its English name Emerald comes from the Greek word "smaragdos", meaning "green stone". Cleopatra (the Egyptian queen) was so obsessed with emeralds that she had her own mine. The ancient Roman scholar Pliny once wrote: "Nothing is greener than it.
In South America, the Incas regarded emeralds as sacred. Legend has it that the emerald gives the wearer the ability to see the future and protects them from evil.
