Understanding the third C of diamonds - Clarity
Diamond is a mineral that grows naturally in the earth's natural world. Since diamonds are extremely complex in the growth process, it is almost impossible for diamonds to be free of impurities, so pure diamonds are relatively rare.Diamond clarity refers to the degree of internal and surface defects in a diamond. Usually, the clearer the diamond, the higher its value.
The inclusions inside are called inclusions, and because the inclusions inside each diamond are different, they are also the mark of each diamond's identity. The GIA classifies diamond inclusions into 11 grades, the highest being "FL" and the lowest being "I3".
The GIA uses the following grades to describe the clarity of a diamond.
-
FL (Flawless): Completely flawless, the most precious and expensive diamond.
-
IF (Internally Flawless): No internal defects, but may have surface defects.
-
VVS1, VVS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included): Very minor defects.
-
VS1, VS2 (Very Slightly Included): Minor defects.
-
SI1, SI2 (Slightly Included): Small defects.
-
I1, I2, I3 (Included): Obvious flaws that may affect the brilliance of the diamond.
Clarity grading requires training and observation with a 10x magnifying glass, the average person can only see a few flaws in "SI1" or "SI2", while higher grades are not easily visible. There are also many different types of inclusions, for example
- Pinpoint (Pinpoint)
- Crystal
- Feather (Crack)
- Cloud (Cloud)
- Natural (original crystal surface)
It is important to note that even for diamonds of the same clarity grade, the location, shape and number of flaws will have an impact on the value of the diamond. Therefore, when choosing a diamond, it is important to consider the clarity grade of the diamond, the type and location of the flaws, as well as the color, cut and weight of the diamond. It is best to ask a professional diamond appraiser to evaluate and advise on the diamond before purchasing.
